Modern Art Is Expensive
Modern wall art is expensive. From completely white canvases to simple abstract colours. The seemingly basic works cost you millions. So what makes their price so high and how can they possibly be worth this much money?
Modern art is a wide field covering everything from about 1870 to 1970. At the turn of the century art changed from the birth of abstract expressionism to minimalism. Art was no longer just representing the world. Since the invention of photography representational art has gradually faded out. Art generally became more conceptual and more challenging but this change was not popular to everyone. In 2016 a survey was carried out which showed that 65-85% of the public don't consider modern conceptual pieces art.
Over a hundred years after its creation the work still somehow divisive and controversial as ever with the public. But this hasn't stopped record prices being set.
Most people think that modern or contemporary artist are having a laugh at their expense and nobody wants to be a fool. For many who are immediately dismissive of these pieces frustration often comes when they see the price. Most people see art as value and when they see such pieces they ask themselves why is it so much when I could make it myself!?
